The Youth Day Football Celebration will take place on the 16 June 2010 at the Cecil Payne Stadium in Maraisburg, Johannesburg South Africa. Young people from all over Gauteng will be bussed to the Stadium from 08h00 in the morning. Our plan is to entertain the youth for the duration of the day. Activities will end at around 17h00.

    EVENT PROGRAM

08:00-10:00 Buses to collect youths from various communities and take them to the stadium.
10:00-12:00 Open Creative event, Football Skill Displays, coaching workshops etc
12:00-13:00 Lunchtime: Concert by major South African Artists.

    ACTIVITIES

Artists will be asked to interpret the day's theme by utilizing a medium in which they are proficient e.g. painting, photography, sketching or graffiti.

Musicians and Poets will have the opportunity to collaborate in an 'open -microphone event' where they will be encouraged to interpret their world cup experiences through utilization of Brazilian and South African influences.

There also will be skills a display, coaching workshops and tournaments for the youth exposing them to different football genres. It is our plan to have a "Keepie-Uppie", freestyle and traditional football (divided into various skills such as dribbling and kicking) workshops throughout the day ending with a showcase of the best talent. The final event of the day will be a football game between Brazilian and South- African youth.

Cultural activities that include dance and food will also contribute to the learning and expose of the day.

Eletrocooperativa will provide a group of Brazilian youngsters to film, document and report on the day's activities. A documentary of the day's proceedings will be produced. Activities included in the documentary will provide a platform to unlock the collaborative and autonomous learning that is inherent in communities. This documentary will present an opportunity to find answers to the question posed "What is my World Cup?"

Once we received the go-ahead from the Brazilian Embassy we will seek ways in which we can turn the planned activities into income generating opportunities for the participants through funding, sponsorships and prizes.

    Background

In 1975 protests started in African schools after a directive from the then Bantu Education Department that Afrikaans had to be used on an equal basis with English as a language of instruction in secondary schools. The issue, however, was not so much the Afrikaans as the whole system of Bantu education which was characterized by separate schools and universities, poor facilities, overcrowded classrooms and inadequately trained teachers. On 16 June 1976 more than 20 000 pupils from Soweto began a protest march. In the wake of clashes with the police, and the violence that ensued during the next few weeks, approximately 700 people, many of them youth, were killed and property destroyed. However, it is a fact that nowadays those celebrations are politically orientated. The truth is that the day should be dedicated to the youth. The Youth Day Football Celebrations will claim the day back to the youth who are facing current challenges such as: HIV/AIDS, crime, drugs and the list goes on.

University of Johannesburg BA Corporate Communication Honors 2010 class is handling the communication and marketing aspects of the event. They are represented by Reitumetse Baase and Ntando Magangane. Mrs. Rene Benecke oversees and mentors all their all the marketing endeavors.
Sophiatown Football academy The Sophia town Football Academy was specifically called into life to focus on developing the youth from previously disadvantaged areas, to represent South Africa (Bafana Bafana) in the future. The football academy strives to build future leaders that will serve the youth as role models. The focus areas are: Westbury, Soweto, Eldorado Park, Ennerdale and the entire South Africa.
